The first seed of Orthodox Syrian Church was laid outside India when our forefathers under the British colonial rule ventured to Malaya and Singapore after the World War I. The Holy Qurbana was conducted for the first time in March 1928 by Abo Alexios (Mattakkal) of Bathany Ashram, Kerala, who later became the Bishop of Quilon. Our community started growing and church understood the need of having a permanent vicar. Rev Fr. T I Joseph was appointed as the first Vicar of Malaya and Singapore and served till 1939. However all migration and communication between Singapore and India was ceased for a period of 8-10 years following the Second World War. During this troubled time our community attended regular Sunday worship with the help of lay leaders.
